Built around the idea of hospitality, the exhibition provides an opportunity to explore the concepts attached to this notion, while also engaging more specifically with questions of collaboration and influence between artists. In French, the word “hôte“ refers both to the person who welcomes and the person who is welcomed. In English, however, two opposing terms are used: “host” for the person who welcomes, and “guest” for the person who is invited. The host establishes rules and customs, welcoming others onto their territory, while the guest implicitly agrees to follow these rules, sometimes feeling held hostage by them. The shared root of the words hôte and otage (hostage) nevertheless suggests that an ambiguous dynamic can emerge from this relationship.

With this exchange and dialogue—or confrontation—in mind, the gallery will be divided into several spaces, each occupied by a duo of artists who will define their own terms of hosting and being hosted. This framework will allow unique and singular entities to emerge, as the identity of each artist gradually fades in favour of a common, shared identity.

This artistic exchange can take several forms: a simple dialogue between two works; one artist altering the other’s work (covering, erasing, adding to it, etc.); or an artist occupying the exhibition space while incorporating the other’s work (painted wall, surface projection, etc.). This range of possibilities will explore the act of creating together, encouraging the emergence of resonances and associations—or, conversely, revealing irreconcilable tensions through this face-to-face encounter.
