ANTOINE MARQUIS | COSTUMES FOR A SHOW
31.05.2017 - 24.06.2017
In collaboration with Julien Carreyn
Opening on Wednesday, May 31, from 6 to 9 pm
A series of photographs taken by Antoine Marquis depicts the beaches of the Vendée, the region where he grew up. They tell the story of adolescence by the sea: surfing beaches, and the shapes and colours of seaside resorts. These photographs had long been forgotten at the bottom of a box. Today, they are brought back to life and enriched through their juxtaposition with the artist’s drawings, which evoke, like memories, figures dressed in colourful, eclectic outfits, vaguely tropical in style, as though they belonged to a remote tribe or were preparing for a school end-of-year performance.
These drawings, with their tacky exoticism, recently led to a return to photography, in a series that is equally colourful and down-to-earth, with the models acting like the unruly, joyful performers in an amateur theatre production.
Antoine Marquis’s images, brought together and staged by Julien Carreyn, thus come full circle, closing the loop on a distant Endless Summer.
